Is from the semi-nomadic Mirasi Community which hails from the Thar Desert in Rajasthan.
Mukhtiyar represents the 26th generation of this humble community which has successfully kept alive the oral
tradition of Sufiana Qalam.
Parvathy Baul
is a singer from West Bengal. After receiving her
initial music and dance training during her childhood, she studied visual arts at the Kala Bhavan at
Shantiniketan, the university founded by Rabindranath Tagore.
Her meeting with the living tradition of Baul prompted her to choose the path of self-training in the Baul
order rather than an institutional degree.
Prahlad Tipanya
is one of the most compelling folk voices of Kabir in India today who combines singing and
explanation of Kabir in the Malwi folk style from Madhya Pradesh. He has toured the US and in Feb 2008 was
felicitated with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. In 2011, he
was awarded India’s fourth highest civilian award, The Padna Shri.
Shabnam Virmani
is a filmmaker and artist from Bangalore. 7 years ago she started travelling with folk
singers in Malwa, Rajasthan and Pakistan in a quest for the spiritual and socio-political resonances of the
15th century mystic poet Kabir in our contemporary worlds. She is the founder and Director of the Kabir
Project, Bangalore. Inspired by the inclusive spirit of folk music, she has begun to play the tambura and
sing folk songs of Kabir herself.
